We are always changing. You are not the same person you were a year ago… things are always changing. Where does this change come from?

Let’s look at what it means to set an intention and allow it to become reality. It sounds simple- two steps! It is simple, and it can be easy, but once the intention is set, we must continually allow a path for that intention to unfold… over and over, each and every moment. It’s like breathing. Have you ever thought about how we are never “done” breathing? If you want to keep living, you need to keep breathing, and that is because breathing is essential to living. And guess what, so are having intentions and creating! Intending and creating are basic life principles that we are doing continuously, just like breathing.

In order to inspire ourselves to create our desires, let’s say that this notion of constantly intending and creating is absolutely true! Let’s make it a law and let’s call it the Law of Intention. I propose that we try testing out this law together to experience its potential in our lives. This is where the powerful tool of awareness comes in.

Awareness

As I watch myself learn the process of awareness and intentional creation, I see how tricky it can be to realize that I am doing it constantly. Sometimes I feel that life is happening to me. Sometimes it seems as though I am not the one behind the wheel. When that seems to be the case, give yourself time to ask if perhaps you created the situation at hand and if so, why. Chances are there will be some truth to what you are experiencing- and sprinkling a bit of awareness on it can really show you what that truth is.

How exactly, do we learn to create consciously?

Over the coming year, let’s explore the following ideas together- or, change them as we go along! Here is an overview for creating in the coming year:

Set Your Intentions
Give yourself space. Give yourself time. With space and time, you will be able to tune into the place inside of you that knows what you truly want and need. Set aside fears, apprehensions, and logical reasons why you can’t or shouldn’t create this or have that and just allow yourself to become aware of your desires. They point to what you intend, and once you have a clear picture of that (try free-writing to allow your thoughts) you will see whether you are doing things that support or inhibit your intentions.

Use Your Thoughts to Guide You
Do you sometimes get caught up in thinking about how the things you’d like to change in your life are instead of how you would like them to be? I do. I notice that when I do this, it doesn’t feel too good. I also notice that I can find myself in a much better place with all my creations when I allow myself to feel GOOD- that is, create from a place of feeling good. The past is the past, and it does not equal the future, so let your mistakes go (after you learn from them) and allow positive thoughts to guide you in the right direction. If you notice yourself thinking thoughts of deflation, self-criticism, or worry, stop yourself and ask if it is neccesary. I have been practicing this for the past 6 months and it seems to be a matter of following through on your intentions to change your habitual thought patterns. I have noticed that with a little bit of time and practice, I now have a deeper awareness of my thoughts. With that comes an ability to make a choice and shape my own thinking when I would like to.

Observe What You’ve Created- Let Your Feelings Guide You
Our environment- our life circumstances are there to teach us. Look around yourself and ask, “What have I created?” Now compare what you’ve created to what you’ve done to create it. See how they are related? It’s amazing! You may think, well, I intended something much different than I ended up with… but if we examine our moment to moment thoughts, we will find that the thoughts we think are continuously steering us in one direction or another. Were you thinking intentionally? Perhaps, if not, you steered yourself off course. No need to force anything, struggle, or work hard. This is a process of letting go and going with the flow- your flow. What a wonderful opportunity to create.

What is it that guides us as we steer? Our feelings. At any moment your feelings are guiding you and we will also explore using them as our true guidance system, while we experience, shape and create our destiny…

Custom Furniture Design and Decor

During the Summer and Fall of 2001, my wife and I had extensive dealing with Nancy Nashed with respect to the design and furnishing of a home. She at all times was professional and a diligent, and showed tremendous enthusiasm and drive while carrying out her job. . . At the time I was Senior Vice President of Vail Resorts Development Company and would have been happy to have her as one of our team.
My family and I had the pleasure of working with Nancy Nashed on an array of different projects. Her professional, yet natural demeanor made it easy to get the job done, hassle-free. She always made herself available at critical points of the project, when we needed her most.
-Jim Mandel, former Vice President, Vail Resorts

Feng Shui and Graphic Design

Nancy Nashed handles all the graphics for Vince Vanni & Associates, Inc. as well as the majority of our clients. Nancy possesses all the essential qualities of an effective graphic artist. She understands how to project your company image, but couples this understanding with a rare asset not usually found in artists. She has the ability to understand her client, her client’s message and also has the ability to communicate that message effectively, through her art.
-Vince Vanni, President and CEO, Vince Vanni & Associates, Inc.

Nancy works continuously with my company, creating advertising materials, logos, art work for clothing and catalog work. She is tremendously creative and full of options and ideas. Nancy also works with my husband’s company as a feng shui consultant, as well as creating all of his art work and advertising materials. It has been one-stop shopping.

We recently moved into a new house, so we promptly hired Nancy to create a space that would be creative and full of love. Nancy, feng shui extraordinaire, came to our home and helped us create an environment that exceeded our expectations. She took the time to personally walk us through, step by step, the changes we needed to make for optimum flow of good energy. It has been a beautiful experience to work with Nancy. I give Nancy my highest recommendation.

Nancy, I couldn’t have asked for a better logo design than you made for my company. I am so pleased with your work and most of all, you. You are a joy to work with and have made everything go smoothly. I am recommending you to all of my friends and business associates.

…..Your website is great and full of excellent information. You did an amazing job on my house and changed the energy completely. I feel that the changes you suggested and I implemented have done something almost magical to our household. Thanks for everything that you do. Keep up the good work. I am a believer in Feng Shui!!!

Thanks for everything Nancy!!
- Stacy Fiano, Founder of Peace Love Yoga

Gorgeous!! I might even keep the back white – love the lotus! It’s just wonderful Nancy! Everything looks great Nancy. Thanks!
- Stacia Bevan, Natural Healing

Hi Nancy,
It was nice having you here and we have incorporated many of your ideas and made other changes to clean up our space and feel better. Love the bedroom now that the books are in the living room and my Ladro are in the bedroom where I can enjoy them.

Bookcase in LR has been rearranged and artificial plants removed from various places. Still much to do , but feel good with your suggestions. Had to go to Boston last week , home now , so will try to continue with projects. Will attend some of your offerings when I get back on my organized schedule.
-Thanks again, Judy & Joe

Faux Finishing

I met Nancy Nashed at Bikram Hot Yoga about a year ago. When I left class that day I noticed the business sign on her SUV stating she does Faux painting. I asked to her to come over to my home and give me an estimate on a couple of rooms. What started out as a two room job turned into the whole house. That’s how good she is.

Nancy is very professional and very talented at what she does. Very quick. Very tidy. And very reasonable. She transformed my home. Her ideas on colors and furniture arrangement turned my house into a home …warm and inviting. To say I am pleased with Nancy would be an understatement. I still brag about her whenever I get a chance.

I miss fixing her carrot and apple juice every afternoon. I would most definitely use her again and recommend her to anybody.
- Rob Riley, Real Estate Agent

Feng Shui Consultation

As an Acupuncture Physician I understand the Oriental philosophy of style and placement and color in the workplace and at home. I had attempted to follow the guideline in our clinic and could see and feel the benefits. I also knew there was so much more to it and I did not have the time to go back to school to study Feng Shui. When I found Nancy I was so excited I could barely wait for her to start changing our “stuff”. We had recently painted and redesigned the reception room and my consultation room. They looked pretty but I could feel something was missing. Nancy spent a good bit of time sitting in our reception room – “examining” the placement of the furniture, the traffic flow, and the sounds, fragrance of the tea brewing, the music, temperature, music and general ambiance of the room. Nancy presented a very detailed list of recommendations and the reasons for them. I have had other designers help me in the past and this was a first! Nancy made an appointment for “hands on time” with me and we spent hours moving and rearranging not only the chairs but little details such as moving the magazine holders a few inches this way or that way. As I received different diplomas or certificates – we’d hang them on the wall – they looked fine but when Nancy moved them around – my goodness, what a difference!

Every inch of that room was lovingly touched and re-positioned by her. The next morning the staff and the first few patients asked me questions like – did we paint last night? Did we get new furniture; did I have a cleaning service in? Strange questions – all with very positive comments. Even the patients in wheelchairs made a comment that they felt like they were integrated in the room just not “put” somewhere – we had no idea anyone felt that way. For those comments alone – it was worth it. The rest of that week people would compliment us on the “new reception room! It was all positive, exciting and amazing. I could not wait for Nancy to come back and “treat” my consultation room. It was new, pretty and functional but I didn’t care to be in there long. I did my initial interview with a new patient and we left the room. After Nancy got through with it – WOW. I had a very large painting of a Chinese street scene with people milling about. No one ever commented on it and I really forgot it was even there. Nancy suggested I paint the wall red-. RED, in a doctor’s office – oh my!!!!!?????? We did it and the difference is incredible. The painting comes alive – the room is warm and inviting. I actually like to spend time in there chatting with patients. People walk by the room and look in, especially the children.

Nancy went above and beyond any of my expectations – and I had a good bit of knowledge on Feng Shui. She was delightful to work with – Nancy puts her heart and soul into her work. I would recommend her for any place of business and home. I would especially recommend her work if your business is slow or your home life is lacking in harmony and peace. Feng Shui is thousands of years old and it would last this long – only if it worked!!! Nancy – thank you a million times!!!!!
-Dr. Debra Gaffney, A.P. Acupuncturist

I have had the pleasure of knowing Nancy Nashed for several years and working with her on many, many projects around my house and office. She is super professional, extremely knowledgeable, creative, talented and artistic. Her work is always “above and beyond” your expectations. But the best thing about Nancy is her sweet and gentle spirit. She is intelligent, caring, compassionate, and kind. We need more people like her !!! I would recommend her to anyone!
-Dolores Holleman, Owner and operator of Hair Free by Dolores

Graphic Design

You are absolutely amazing…… It looks wonderful
– Astrologer and Speaker, Kelly Lowe

OMG! You are amazing!
-Krista Ghaffarian

Thank you for the list. Your ideas are magical. I now see light and I will be able to achieve this on my budget. I really like the idea of the glass doors with hinges for my side shelves. Thank you much.
– Jean Caron, Acupuncture Physician

ArtHaus has been working with Nancy for about 2 years now and she is an absolute blessing to us! With only 2 part-time employees, neither being tech-savvy, creating any kind of graphic is nearly impossible. We were in need of someone who could create small ads that were bright, bold and eye-catching….along came Nancy! I am so impressed with how quickly and creatively she creates the graphics, balancing our needs with her artistic eye! Absolutely everything she has created has been beautiful! She has never taken more than 24 hrs to create our ads and responds to our requests with enthusiasm and patience. I could not recommend an easier or more enjoyable graphic designer to work with. We really couldn’t do with out her now, we’re hooked on Wind Water Arts!
- Catie Tappan, Office/Gallery Manager, ArtHaus Foundation

Nancy is creative AND easy to work with. She accepts critique and change requests with class and patience which is a difficult quality to find in a graphic designer. Her work is multi-dimensional and cross platform with style and grace. Nancy has a deep understanding of client needs and she performs her work with outstanding punctuality . We use Nancy for all of our major design work and will continue to do so as long as she is available.” On Time , High Integrity , Creative.

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal & Water

The 5 Element Cycle in Feng Shui The five elements cycle in Feng Shui refers to the cycle of nature that can be perceived in all processes of life. This chart shows how the energy of the elements are in constant fluctuation. Generating Cycle Water feeds a tree, while a tree, Wood can fuel fire. Fire in turn falls as ashes to the ground where they harden into t Earth. Earth hardens over time and produces Metal. When Metal liquefies it produces the element of Water.

Water generates wood. Rain nourishes a tree

Wood generates fire. Burning wood generates fire

Fire generates earth. Ash is created from the fire

Earth generates metal. Metal is mined from the earth

Metal generates water. Water condenses on metal

Reductive Cycle Fire controls Metal which controls Wood which controls Earth which controls Water which controls Fire. Think of the process as if one element is influencing another in a controlling manner, rather than as one element destroying another.

Think of a metal axe. You use it to chop down a tree, so Metal destroy Wood

Imagine a tree (Wood) that extracts water and minerals from the earth to grow, so Wood destroys Earth

When a river overflows (water) you use bags of sand (earth) to stop the water, so Earth controls Water

You can extinguish fire with water, so Water destroys Fire A foundry uses fire to melt metal, so Fire destroys Metal

Wood is represents the color green, springtime and east. Wood also represents birth and early childhood. Wood can be pliant and bending (willow) or strong and unyielding (oak). Wood is creative and innovative. Those with a large amount of this element in our charts, we will express ourselves creatively in some way. Wood is socially and communally oriented. Part of the East Life Group.

Fire is the element of leadership. It is represented by the color red, summer and south. Fire represents the growing years preceding puberty. Fire is energetic and vibrant. It can indicate intensity or danger. Fire is warming and cheerful, but destructive and powerful. Part of the East Life Group.

Earth is represented by the color yellow, the center of the circle and teenage years. Earth is an element of stability and relates to real estate and legacies. Earth is patient, honest and methodical. It belongs to the West Life Group.

Metal is white, but can also be gold, silver or pink. It represents autumn and west. Metal means harvest, business and prosperity. This is usually financial prosperity. Metal can be powerful like a sword or a knife. Metal represents the adult years. It belongs to the West Life Group.

Water represents the color black, winter, and north. Water represents the final years, old age. Water is travel, communication, learning, literature, the arts, and the media. Water can be gentle like rainfall and violent like a hurricane. It nourishes all living things, while having the ability to make it’s way through dense rock. Part of the East Life Group.

How can we apply this to our home using Feng Shui? The following are some items with strong elemental energy

Fire- candles, a red vase, A bowl of red peppers, Earth- A clay pot, stone, pottery, crystals, gems, Metal- wind chime, or objects made of copper, brass or bronze, clocks Water – waterfall, image of a lake/ ocean, fish tank Wood- a plant, floor lamp, vertical statue, houseplants

Each color is an expression of one of the Five Feng Shui Elements: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood. The elements are used in specific areas according to the feng shui energy map of your space, or Bagua.

FIRE – PASSION AND HIGH ENERGY A balanced Feng Shui Fire element in your space will bring a supporting energy in all your career efforts and will help you achieve recognition.

Fire is the Feng Shui element of South. Fire energy is also recommended in the Northeast and Southwest Feng Shui areas of your space.

EARTH – NOURISHMENT AND STABILITY A strong and harmonious Feng Shui Earth element in your home will help create stability, nourishment and protection for all your relationships.

Earth is the Feng Shui element of Northeast and Southwest. It is also the element of Center of your home.

METAL – CLARITY AND PRECISENESS Feng Shui Metal element brings the qualities of sharpness, precision, clarity and efficiency; its balanced presence will help you live with clarity and lightness

Metal is the Feng Shui element of West and Northwest. Metal element is also good to use in the North area of your home or office.

WATER – EASE, FRESHNESS AND ABUNDANCE A harmonious Feng Shui Water element will bring a refreshing energy of calm, ease, purity and freshness Water is also the ancient symbol of abundance, and a very effective Feng Shui element

Water is the Feng Shui element of North. Water element is also good to use in the East and Southeast areas of your space.

WOOD – HEALTH AND VITALITY Lush and healing, the Feng Shui Wood element will bring the energy of health, vitality and growth. It is also an expression of abundance, thus an ancient Feng Shui cure for wealth and prosperity

Wood is the Feng Shui element of the East and Southeast areas of your space. Wood element is also good to use in the South.

What is your Personal Feng Shui Element?

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water

The elements in the five element cycle, represent various stages within the cycle of life or nature. Finding Your Personal Element Illustrates how you interact relatively with others and their Personal Elements. It also allows you to work with your best directions for sleeping, eating, studying, business & more. To learn more about how the five elements work, calculate your element below, and then read about the five elements under The Five elements of Feng Shui section. You can work with your directions based on the chart below the worksheet. Your Best Directions Based on your Element

The first thing most people need to know is whether they are an “East House Person” or a “West House Person.” This refers to the favorable and unfavorable directions I mentioned in the last post.

To Find out, you will need to calculate Your Ming Gua

1. determine your birth year. – annual energy in feng shui begins on February 4th or 5th depending on the position of the sun. For people born on a date from January 1 through February you will use the number for the previous year Birth Year Here_______

2. add together the four digits of your birth year: ie (1 + 9 + 7 + 1 = 18)_________

3. continue adding until you have a single digit: ie (1 + 8 = 9) _______________

4. for a woman: add 4 to the number from step two: ie (4 + 9 = 13) ____________

5. If this results in a 2-digit #, add together to get a single-digit # : ie (1 + 3 = 4) ______

6. for a man: subtract from 11 the number from step two: ie (11 – 9 = 2) ________

7.*If the calculations in step three result in 5, women use the number 8 as your ming gua, and men use the number 2 as your ming gua. (We transform the number 5 into either 2 or 8 because 5 is reserved for the center and is not assigned a direction or a trigram.)

Fill in your Ming Gua Below Number________Element___________

Find Your Ming Gua # in the chart below- That is your direction, along with your environmental energy signature : earth, metal, water, wood, or fire

1 N water 3 E wood 4 SE wood 9 S fire 2 SW earth 6 NW metal 7 W metal 8 NE earth

If your Ming Gua is Wood, Fire, or Water, You are an East Life group. If it is Earth or Metal you are a West Life group.

Your Ming Gua correlates with a direction as seen above. This main direction relates to Overall Prosperity and Clear Thinking. It also resonates with your Personal Element and is sometimes called your Fu Wei.

You can face this direction for clear thinking (at your desk or meditating) or lie in bed with the crown of your head towards this direction for prosperity and restful sleep.

Yin and Yang in the Home

One of the basic tools we use in Feng Shui is the principle of Yin and Yang. It is the essential philosophy behind the five elements, and working with an environment.

We can use Yin and Yang ideas when making judgments and decisions about how to bring in different attributes of Color, Shape, Size, Texture and elements into our space to create a quiet, nurturing space, or a more vibrant, and energetic one.

The main idea behind Yin and Yang is the idea of relativity. Meaning Yin and Yang are not merely opposites, but different levels of being on the same wheel; or in Feng Shui terms, different places within the elemental cycle. As we cover the elemental cycle, you will see why different colors, shapes, sizes, and therefore elements correspond to different levels of Yin and Yang and how observing these levels and how they can be very helpful tools in creating your environment.

One of my favorite Authors is Scott Peck. He wrote the Road Less Travelled. In one of his books…He says there is no such thing as opposites, only different levels of the same thing. That phrase boggled my mind…especially since I was much younger when I read it and am still learning everything it means. I went around telling everyone my new discovery and waiting to see their reactions. Some people disagreed with me. Some people brushed it off, and some were intrigued. I really liked the thought because it completely changed the way I looked at things. It was a fact of reality that I had never been taught, and so I didn’t see it- even though proof was all around me. And the more I looked around and contemplated this new idea, the more I could apply it to.

All matter, energy, time and space came from one single point- one singularity. Yin and Yang are different expressions of the same singularity. As humans, we all have the same type of energy flowing through us. And all beings, from a tiny microbe to the strongest of human beings are made of the same matter.

In the technological age, we can look at the use of Yin and Yang and computers. Computer language is written in binary code. There are only two symbols, 0 and 1. So no matter how complicated a program, it can still be broken into codes of 0 and 1. Or, Yin and Yang. Binary code is an example of simple components being interwoven to create things of enormous complexity.

At a universal level, we can say that everything in this universe is either matter or energy or a combination of both.

Or you could say yin, or yang, or a combination of both.

Things to remember about the concept of Yin and Yang, especially when applying it as a tool in your home and with feng shui is:

Yin and Yang are always relative. There is never a wrong or right with Yin and Yang. What might feel more soothing to one, may be a little more distracting for someone else. Like a chair that’s comfy, yet bright red:

You can always try something, and then change it. It’s never a waste of effort because each time you learn so much about yourself and your environment.

Carl Sagan, when producing his PBS series popularized the term, billions and billions, which was the title of one of his books. The billions referred to the stars…He was fond of reminding his viewers that we are all “made of star stuff.”

If Matter is Yin, Energy is Yang. If Earth is Yin, Sky is Yang. If Moon is Yin, Sun is Yang If Woman is Yin, Man is Yang

They are all Yin/Yang pairs–one cannot be without the other. When talking in terms of energy and matter energy can’t exist without matter, and matter can’t exist unless it has energy to keep its structure. Simple, but not boring! The reason is that the possibilities for us to create an environment within these rules are infinite.

All music, for example, can be written in seven notes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 but you can never reach a point where no more new music can be created.

You can’t reach a point where no new computer program can be written.

Beautiful music can be created only if it is written with both yin and yang notes.

A computer program cannot be written only with 1 or with 0. Yin and Yang always exist together,-neither can exist without the other

There are no rigid borders between Yin and Yang and they rely on each other to be true. Imagine if there is no earth, then the word sky becomes meaningless. As we are dependent on the universe for our existence, the universe cannot exist without us. There can be no life without death and without death life has no meaning. A human being has both positive energies and negative energies.

Even though in the world of binary, 1 could be nothing further from 0, they are also more alike than any 2 numbers. Because both are what make up binary.

So they are opposites, yet the same. And this is what Scott Peck meant when he said all truth contains paradox. So you can apply feng shui the next time you have a particularly confusing situation, for which you’ve been searching for an answer. You’ll never be wrong. You will learn from what goes right, as well as what goes wrong. And there will always be at least a little of both.

BaGua is one of the main methods used to analyze the feng shui of any given space. Translated from Chinese, it means, 8 areas. The Bagua Map is like an energy map of your home. Just like an acupuncturist maps out areas of your body, with various energy centers, Feng Shui provides us with the Bagua to map the inherent energies within a space. Classical Feng Shui guides you in placing the map in correlation with North South East and West.

In working with the BaGua, think in fractal terms. This means the map works on any scale. You may place it over a blueprint of your entire property, the floor plan of your home, or a specific room. You may even use it in space as small as your desk top.

The eight life areas with which the map corresponds are; Career, Wisdom and Knowledge, Family and Health, Wealth & Prosperity, Fame, Marriage & Relationships, Children & Creativity, Helpful People & Travel.

The chart below illustrates the colors and shapes that correspond with the five elements.

You can use this guide to find elements of decor which support the energetic areas in your home:

North -Water, Blue Wavy Lines Fountains and Birdbaths

South-Fire, Red Pyramidal / Triangle Lights, Outdoor Torches

East-Wood, Green Tall or Rectangular Plants and Columns

West -Metal, Metallic Round and circular Wind chimes, metal sculpture

North compass reading from 337.5 to 22.5 Element: Water Color(s): Blue and Black Life Area: Career/Path in Life

Northeast compass reading 22.5 to 67.5 Element: Earth Color(s): Beige, Light Yelow, and Sandy/Earthy Life Area: Spiritual Growth/Self-Cultivation

The Home Office Part work life, part private, this room in your home can be a very important place to apply Feng Shui. Because there’s a sense of home and work intertwined, the home office offers many creative opportunities, while creating a purposeful design. Having a supportive office environment is a priority for many people, as work itself is often a priority.

Consider the following if you have the luxury of choosing the location of your home office or office building: Since energy enters a building through the front door, you want to set up your home office in the front of the house to take advantage of the flow of energy. If you’re in the back, it’s more difficult to receive the flow of energy. The front area is also beneficial if you will be receiving clients and conducting business with others in your office space. Anytime you can avoid having clients walk through your home, everyone is more comfortable. A rectangular-shaped room is great for a home office. However, if the room you choose for your office is L-shaped, even better-use one of the areas for your desk and the other for a sitting area. Solutions for Less Ideal Locations A cure is a change you make in your environment to bring balance and harmony into the space. When the flow of energy is blocked or stagnant, a cure can get the energy moving again to help you create change. Windows are important for inspiration, but if there’s none, brighten up the room with yellow paint, bright lights, or pictures of nature. If you share a tight space with someone, use plants or dividers to define your own space and create privacy and concentration. Sometimes you may be situated at a dead end street. In this case use plenty of signs, lights and clear pathways to direct traffic towards the building. This can be done subtly in even a non-commercial setting.

Furniture Placement

Desk Placement is the first step to arranging your office space. Position the desk in the command position of the room. To do this practically, choose a spot that feels most in command of the space. Aim to face the door, so that you can easily see whoever may come in. As much as possible, avoid doors jutting out into your workspace at your side, and especially at your back. Ideally the window should be at your side. This allows you to see the view out the window without it being the focal point of the room, as in this case your workspace is the focus and priority. A sturdy bookshelf behind you is very supportive but try as much as possible to avoid too much clutter on the shelves, and have cabinet doors closed if possible to hide any work in progress that you need to get to later.

A healthy flow around the furniture is important for maneuvering as you reach for different files, office supplies and deal with clients. You can’t over-estimate the rewards of having a clear, well- functioning area around your desk. Keeping your files organized and easily accessible saves time and energy. Use handy pieces like printer stands and extra file cabinets that can be easily moved around or re-positioned depending on the nature of your project. Don’t position your desk where you feel cramped, confined, have a limited field of vision, or where there is a passageway behind you. Remember that your ability to function comfortably and efficiently is a priority.

In Feng Shui, empty space is essential so you have room to breathe and let new and inspiring ideas in. Don’t give in to the temptation to fill every corner with a piece of furniture. Studies have shown an increased sense of well-being and higher productivity when a plant is place on the desk. Plants are great for filling in empty corners or creating slight dividers in the office as well. They provide healthy air, which can compensate for too much office equipment and the heat caused by computer equipment. Plants provide a feeling of energy and promote growth and expansion.

Color

It helps to choose the colors you plan to live with in your home or office with awareness of how different colors affect your emotional and physical states. Every color has a unique vibration all of its own, and this can significantly affect how you feel in a room. We all have a favorite color, but be sure the color you choose for your office space is conducive to concentration and clear, positive thinking. Some great colors for an office space are yellow, red, blue-green, and earthy colors. Yellow stimulates clarity of thought, creativity, and mental activity-making it an excellent color for a home office. Red is an aggressive color, so it’s a good choice for anyone making deals or selling, and for those who entertain clients in their office. Compare the image below with the one above. How does the red color make you feel as you imagine being the one sitting behind this desk?

A blue-green color can be soothing, and creative-a good color choice for writers. Oranges and other warm desert colors stimulate socialization and collaboration-good for a small office using a team approach to management. Your ceiling may be painted a light color -a dark color may make you feel as if there’s a dark cloud hanging over your head while you work.

Style & Theme

Aim to use a theme that inspires you when decorating your office. This allows for a variety of styles and ideas, and can often be a good conversation starter for clients entering the space. Start by choosing supportive colors. You may want a feeling of casual comfort. Or you may find it necessary to express a more serious tone. If you are promoting health services, counseling or care of others, use pastels as they are soothing. You may want clean trendy lines if you are in the design business. If you feel inspired by a regal look, use golds and copper in your decor. You can also try thinking about what inspires your work life, and use those ideas to help you choose a theme.

Powerful and Meaningful Objects, Artwork Look around your home for meaningful and beautiful objects that you can showcase in your office space. You may want to frame a series of photos from some inspirational travel you have done, photos of happy clients or completed projects, or your diplomas, certificates of appreciation, awards and honors. The theme of your office is up to you- just remember to keep simple and un-cluttered so there is plenty of room for new and creative ideas.
